#AroostookThing of the week: The Aroostook Birders Christina Reservoir Shorebirds Walk in Fort Fairfield on Saturday, September 10.

County Line

Millions of people worldwide enjoy watching birds.

And, wouldn’t you know it; some of those people happen to live right here in Aroostook County.

It’s a fact. Some of those #Aroostookians that enjoy watching birds have formed a club.

Collectively, they are known as the Aroostook Birders. They put on some fantastic events year-round that are designed to share their passion for bird-watching and their appreciation for northern Maine’s natural environment.

If you have always wondered how experienced birders can confidently identify birds with just a glimpse or where to go to find birds, then this weekend’s #AroostookBirders event is surely for you.

The group is hosting a Shorebirds Walk, rain or shine, at Christina Reservoir in Fort Fairfield from 8:00-11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 10.

Christina is one of the best spots in #TheCounty to see a diversity of migrating shorebirds; almost 20 different species were seen here last year! Participants will walk the dike and scan the shores at a peak time for species diversity and numbers; low water levels will provide ample habitat. Some spotting scopes available for use.

Interested parties will meet at the reservoir access point on Conant (Townline) Rd. Be sure to dress for the weather and terrain. Visit www.aroostookbirders.com for more information.

#AroostookNote: Aroostook skies, undoubtedly, are some of the clearest in the lower 48. Our night skies have put on quite a show as of late; if you’re one of the lucky ones, you’ve been able to see some spectacular meteor showers and aurora borealis displays. I just got word that a new astronomy club is starting up in Presque Isle, appropriately know as #TheStarCity. Check the September listing in the calendar for more info.
