#AroostookThing of the week: The Allagash Wilderness Waterway 50th Anniversary Celebration in Allagash Village

Cross Lake

Ever been to Allagash?

In and of itself, a trip to Allagash Village is a once in a lifetime experience.

This Saturday, however, the Town of Allagash, the Maine Bureau of Parks and Lands, the Allagash Wilderness Waterway Foundation and others are upping the ante with a celebration for the ages.

Organizers have planned a day of family fun activities, including cultural and historical displays at the Allagash Historical Museum and Louie’s Antique Chainsaw Museum, and a Waterway Film Show at the Faye O’Leary Hafford Library, all of which are open all day; a Paddle & Pole Canoe Clinic and Canoe Rides at 10:00 a.m.; 20-minute Bateaux Rides for $15/person; a free Bean Supper; landowner and stakeholder booths, one of which will feature Smokey the Bear; Timber Tina’s Great Maine Lumberjack Show, which costs $5/person but kids under 12 are free; plus free live entertainment in town and exhibits and demonstrations at historic Michaud Farm.

No matter where you are from, if you are going to go to Allagash just once in your lifetime, this Saturday, August 20, is the time to go; I guarantee it will be worth the trip!

To find out more, visit www.allagash.info.

#AroostookNote: If you can’t make it to Allagash this weekend, don’t fret. A trip to one of Maine’s most special places is always worth the effort, if not to experience the remote beauty and rich history, then simply to sample the homespun menu and hospitality at Two Rivers Lunch. It’s a trip you and your family will talk about for a lifetime!
